But after the death of Santos, the record is brought to light by the Judge Mr. Lorente, and noted serious irregularities in the proceedings, leading the president to suspend Tajes Plaster Colonel as Chief of Political and Police in January 1889.

Next to the house where he lived plaster, the family lived Oliva-Sghirla. This family was composed by Juan Bautista Oliva, an Italian national, son of DM Olive and Clare Pittman, Joanna Sghirla, a national of Argentina, the daughter of John Sghirla White and Balestra, woman of great beauty.

When Leila Mary died in 1905, Cast a Uruguayan sculptor responsible for a medallion, which is in the box located at the central level, which also shows the economic decline of colonel. As is known

plaster had an intense love life, as have old neighbors, who heard the Colonel, this would have left 50 illegitimate children.

An interesting facet was that of being president set for 3 years carnival and Director of the National Theatre Company, which acted in the building of the present Tacuarembó Technical School. It is known that on 25 August 1882, founding a Social Club called Progress.

Plaster was a handsome man, careful to the extreme of physical and clothing, and a striking artistic inclination. Regarding the artistic and musical vocation of Colonel Ramon Gonzalez says: "Like all his family (brothers, sons and nephews) were very enthusiastic about the guitar and at the hotel, told a Pericones and Cats, which organized with laborers, singing verses with great wit, always accompanied with his guitar. "

Confirming its status as a man of worldly life, Cast, According to his son Charles II Plaster - "El Pato" - was as follows: "The Uruguayan writer and diplomat Edmundo Bianchi, who was with the journalist Blixen Ramirez are standing on the corner of 18 and Yaguarón, next to the Theatre, Colonel Plaster . Bianchi Blixen told him: Look, Colonel plaster, must be waiting for a chorus, let us tell you something. " "Not I said reluctant Blixen, but Bianchi approached him, settling this dialogue:" Good night Colonel, "" Good night Bianchi "he said this. "What do you do At this time Colonel." And plaster or dumb or lazy replied: "And what does that make a soldier? Guard. "

The "Duck" Plaster, also said that his father protected the Don José Batlle y Ordóñez, when he lived some time in San Fructuoso.

And speaking of visitors to this town, we say that in 1883 was in San Fructuoso, General Santos, President of the Nation and this godfather of a child of plaster, Washington, and performing a party night door closed at a nightclub owned luxury plaster, called "Pink."

the death of third wife, Cast joined the Pilar Madorell singer who performed at the Theatre San Fructuoso and became the mother of the children of such person, which disbanded in 1911, in the city of Montevideo.

But Carlos Plaster not only remain in the memories of all Tacuarembonenses as the creator of theater that bore his name, but also as the progenitor of CARLOS GARDEL , the greatest singer of the Rio de la Plata.

In his later years his name appears as a member of Congress tried to proclaim his own presidential candidacy of John L. Slopes, 24 January 1898. Having

ill with congestion, disregarded the doctor's advice and left the night of his home into the theater July 18, where he played one of his "old love", falling heavily the next day. He died on April 27, 1915, at 70 years old poor and forgotten.

HOW WAS SAN FRUCTUOSO At that time

San Fructuoso, who in 1912 called Tacuarembó, was from 1875 to 1900, a small population of 4,500 inhabitants that has developed very slowly.

The little village had no paved roads exist in these large sand dunes. In the corners, crown poles were placed, in order to prevent the carts around corners of houses.

La Plaza "April 19" was lined with iron gates, then fell in parts, and only at the end of the century were withdrawn.

With respect to the other square, the "Columbus" is after 1875 that is built. In that year the lake will dry that existed in the area and which then grow real grass.

However, despite the smallness of the environment, San Fructuoso had an active social life. Were frequent family gatherings where they were playing the lottery, circulating mate sweet and bitter ladies for gentlemen.

Many times, afternoons, between young men and women, were organized driving games where the players put more effort. They were also jackets common parties, where they visited the area around the Villa.

From a cultural standpoint, there were several bands, all well precise in execution.

After 1880, there is the custom of toilets in the seats, which were made on Thursdays and Sundays, with the participation of young ladies and young people in the area.

In 1881, he opened the Lyceum Tacuarembó, led by Apolinario Pérez. In 1891, ten years later, he founded the School Philanthropy, and its director Don Juan Gómez López.

By 1891, San Fructuoso has 23 public and 1 private school with a total of 1,566 students.

From a political standpoint, San Fructuoso was no stranger to intense political rivalries white and color.

An example of this rivalry, is in the continuing campaign against Colonel plaster dropped from the newspaper "El Comercio", in which there was a constant critic, into a charge per day for thirty days, which in turn was answered by the newspaper "El Heraldo", which defended the policy of President Santos red.
So personal was the campaign by "El Comercio", which aimed to give Colonel Escayola. Plaster in 1891 when he resigned, the newspaper longer appears.

We note two important facts for the progress of Tacuarembó: 1 May 1891, when it reaches the first train to San Fructuoso, and 31 May of that year, the day he was inaugurated THEATRE STUCCO, whose centennial we are celebrating.

THEATRE BUILDING PLASTER
1888-1891

As we say in the chapter "The acquisition of the land and its owners" Don Carlos Plaster "was presented stating that several owners , merchants and planters had conceived the idea of \u200b\u200bbuilding a theater building in the Villa de San Fructuoso, trading in shares. " This actually took place, as expressed in plaster in a "Requested" published "El Comercio" on June 20, 1888.

Money collected for 45 shares at 100 pesos each $ 4.500.oo
Interest produced by the money in 4 years, placed one and a half percent per month and without capitalizing
$ 3.240.oo
$ SUM 7.740.oo

As this sum barely enough to start, and there were several issues that were raised, Carlos Plaster decided that it put the rest missing from his pocket: the total construction cost was $ 25,000 .- a fortune for the time.

Before continuing with other aspects of the construction of the theater, we want to dwell on the biography of who made the drawing of the building and directed: Don Victor Luis Alejandro Maria L'Olivier (this is his full name).

L'Olivier was born in Sarge, Department of Marne, France in 1849.

was the son of Francisco and Virginia Herlant L'Olivier, both from Belgium. His paternal grandparents were Pedro Luis L'Olivier and Rosalie Joseph Hagois, Belgians, and maternal grandparents Alexander and Rosalie Herlant Verichient, Belgium.

engineer is received at the Paris Polytechnic and was awarded a surveyor's interim authority, which then revalidated in Uruguay.

His arrival in our department Tacuarembó, has the following origin: Informed

Biraben brothers, merchants of Montevideo, the existence of gold mimas Cuñapirú tried to build a great company with French capital, for exploitation .

In anticipation, they brought the engineer Victor L'Olivier in order to examine these gold mines Cuñapirú and give his report about them.

After examining the mine, Victor L'Olivier returned to Paris and gave a very favorable report, drawing attention in the mine "San Pablo", later called "Santa Ernestina", 5 km. Cuñapirú to SE.

Mine "San Pablo", was acquired in ten million francs, approximately equal to two million pesos of the time, then fabulous sum.

In 1879, in Paris as the "Compagnie Française de l'or de l'Uruguay, installed in the area Cuñapirú. He was appointed Director General of the same, Don Victor L'Olivier, who the journalist Bossi, "commanded more despotic that the King of Tunis. " In January 1880, there is a rebellion of workers, with several deaths.
The large investments of money and led to limited gains in the company had some changes, giving Victor L'Olivier. Later the company went bankrupt, leading to scandals in Paris. Taking

still reside in Corrales, Victor L'Olivier is getting married July 17, 1884, in San Fructuoso, Maria Luisa Gaye, daughter of Don Pablo Gaye, Mary French and Zamit, oriental.

Residing in San Fructuoso, became a close friend of Colonel Carlos plaster, and there is the level of our theater and address of the work.

We are told that the engineer L'Olivier, would have other buildings in our city, we could not locate.

has three children by Luisa Gaye, they are: Victor, Mary and Mary Virginia.

Victor worked at the Regional Hospital, opened in 1928 when the present building. He was the administrator.

Victor L'Olivier died in San Fructuoso, General Flores street, at four in the afternoon of chronic myocarditis, according to death certificate, the November 4, 1909, at 60 years of age.
And to finish with the biography of L'Olivier, say that from 1890 he was hired by the Board E. San Fructuoso Administration for a series of measurements in the Ejido Villa de San Fructuoso.

The construction of plaster theater earned this comment from a reporter traveling Montevideo that the "Herald" of San Fructuoso transcription of August 14, 1890: Tacuarembó theater will be one of the best in the republic. The elegant facade, the competition has access to the interior of seven doors to the front, the sides are two spacious lounges, one of them for coffee, with an internal communication to the theater, built by the plans and under the direction of Mr. Victor L'Olivier, intelligent French engineer, former director of the gold mines Cuñapirú, offers all the amenities and measures security required in this class of establishments. In addition to the regular output, concurrency pot paradise and have the event of danger, two exits that lead down to the roof of the side rooms. Currently working expeditiously on completion and will shortly tacuarembonense society will also have a theater worthy of his culture and the level of the best of the republic. Congratulations

materials were brought to Paso de los Toros rail, and wagons from the Villa of San Fructuoso. Do not forget that the train arrives in San Fructuoso on 1 May 1891. Wagons arrived every few days with materials up to 30 at a cost of 28 to 30 pesos per load.

The tapestries and artifacts, for ornamentation were brought from France.

When asked the way to the front of the stage, the company responsible for building the log that should hold in the action was wrong and built smaller, so we had to adapt the way to the dimensions of it. To bring the beam from Paso de los Toros, it took three months and we used three wagons with 12 oxen. The beam took one and a half to reach Europe. The stage curtain was red velvet, like the general upholstery pelucci red boxes and doors and white gold, red seats. The artifacts were made of bronze and two arms.

The lighting in the center of the room was done by a "spider" of about five feet in diameter, with 13 peaks of more lights and a light to medium. The floors were made from Murano glass, forming a large pink rose and the "spider" - or the down - through a long chain. Its construction was performed by an Italian artist.

who was in charge of the lighting installation was Don José Tachini, it was a gas of coal until 1910, year in which a motor is installed own electricity. It should be noted that just will Tacuarembó electricity from 1917.

immediately, attendance at this event, went to the local concentration School, 18 July Artigas, where the Municipal Comedy performed, with marked success, the work "only once" the Tacuarembó William Saboredo. ------------------------------------------

This work, in little over a month, implies the development of the various stages of our Theatre plaster.
was much the time consumed by this work and we had very little to develop it. We believe that with more time, work would have been more extensive and complete. The theme, exciting for us is very broad and could be any size if not for the tyranny of time, place especially and costs.

However, think we have made an unpublished work at the national level, they do not know of any other similar work regarding the history of theater buildings in the country.

We emphasize that this work was not only we, the undersigned. Many people, with good will, cooperated by providing different materials of real importance. As Don Guillermo Rego, which not only offered us the opportunity to edit this work, but, in turn, gave us various documents of real value.

Among the many other contributors, we want to mention two former employees of Plaster Theatre: Ignacio R. Brocco and Alcira Sosa, also a Don Julio Duthil and finally to Carlos López Saracini. Each made a beautiful material, as well as invaluable documents, patiently "tracked" at the National Library and private files on the theater.

To all, our most fervent gratitude. Without the support of people like them, some we could do, despite much effort. Faces

by Martina IñiguezEsta note shows that we have tried to merge the identity of Carlos Gardel, Uruguayan-born undocumented Tacuarembó, son of Charles and Mary, both Uruguayan, with that of a child born in Toulouse, France, called Charles Gardes, son of Berta Gardes, French and an unknown father. -----------------------------------------------

La Casa del cantor in Montevideo
The house that the singer bought in Montevideo today is an important center of rehabilitación.Un example of community service and the best tribute that could have done to Carlos Gardel, who was a noble, generous and supportive. An award for the "Magician" which can represent more than a monument.
